FRESHMAN YEAR
SYNOPSIS
KT Curran says, "to shine a light on the difficult and sometimes life-altering situations that can happen to young women their freshman year of high school. Girls enter high school still precariously balanced between being a child and an adult. They are often misinformed about issues relating to dating, peer pressure and sexuality. In this play I try to reveal the hidden cultural influences that can lead young girls into situations they are ill-equipped to handle. Misconceptions about dating and sexuality can have dangerous consequences for teenagers—and these misconceptions can lead to serious problems such as eating disorders, low self-esteem, drug abuse and high-risk sexual behavior."
AMAZING GRACE
SYNOPSIS
In the words of Ms. Youngblood, "Amazing Grace is about a little girl who loves acting out stories, those told and read to her by her grandmother as well as ones she reads on her own. She also makes up her own stories, acting out the most exciting parts. When Grace is in her playworld everything to her is real. In her imagination, she becomes the characters: Anansi the Spider, Joan of Arc, Mowgli, Hiawatha. Her grandmother, Nana, believes that Grace can be whatever she wants to be. Grace is told by two of her classmates that she can't be Peter Pan in the school play because she is a girl and because she is black. In the end, Grace shows us that she can indeed do anything she sets her mind to.
OZ
SYNOPSIS
Reeling from her sister's death, Beth suddenly finds herself journeying through a world suspiciously resembling the film The Wizard of Oz. But with the yellow brick road sold to foreign investors after a financial meltdown, the Scarecrow reveling in his ignorant bliss, the Cowardly Lion acting like a paranoid sociopath, and the Tin Man embracing his emotional numbness, Beth wonders what role she plays in this classic story gone awry. A hilarious and heart-wrenching exploration of grief and perseverance on the road to acceptance.
